Prof. (Emeritus) Augustine O. Esogbue (NNOM)


Professor Augustine Moses Onwunyalim Esogbue, holder of three degrees from three of the most prestigious world universities:

  • B.Sc. degree in Electrical-Engineering with minor in Mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
  • M.S. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from Columbia University, New York:
  • Ph.D in Industrial and Systems Engineering (1968) from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

Prof. Esogbue began his brilliant academic career as an Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio in 1968. He worked briefly (1972-77) as Associate Professor and was later promoted professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, in 1977. He thus because the first African of Nigerian descent to attain full professorship in a major U.S. Research University.

Prof. Esogbue’s Key areas of specialization, for which he is widely recognized all over the world, is Dynamic and Fizzy Logic Programming and their application in such diverse multidisciplinary systems as industrial Operations Research and Management, Intelligent Manufacturing Systems and Control, Aeronautics and Space Research, Water Resources and Pollution Management, Bioengineering and Healthcare Management.

His prolific researches have led to the supervision of over 35 Ph.D. and 20 MS theses, as well as the publication of 5 books, 20 book chapters and well over 450 technical publications and presentations.

As a measure of the high global regard enjoyed by Professor Esogbue, he was offered Distinguished Visiting Research Professorships at leading world institutions including the University of California, Berkeley (his Alma Mater), Morehouse School of Medicine at Atlanta, Columbia University,Howard University, the Federal university of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, The Daqing Petroleum Institute and tsuighua university, both in Beijing, China. In collaboration with other research colleagues, he has attracted millions of dollars in research grants.

At the professional level, professor Augustine Esogbue holds, among others, the Fellowships of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, The Nigerian Academy of Science, The Institute for Operations Research and Managements Sciences, The New York Academy of Science, etc. He is also cited in leading world biographical books too numerous to mention.

At his base in the State of Georgia, this worthy son of Nigeria has held the banner of Nigeria high. He was given the “Outstanding Citizen of Georgia Award” and was also inducted member of the “Goodwill Ambassadors corps” of the State in June, 2001. He has also been honoured with several Certificates that eulogize his “loyal”, “outstanding and meritorious” service to the City of Atlanta, the State of Georgia and, indeed, the U.S.A.

Mr. President, Sir it is this distinguished educator, scientist, engineer, technologist and illustrious son of Nigeria, Augustine Esogbue, who has made, and continues to make outstanding contributions and achievements that have significantly advanced the profession of Operations Research and Management Sciences globally that we respectfully request that you invest with the Nigerian National Order of Merit for the year 2006.
